What "out-the-door" means

The out-the-door (OTD) price is the total you pay to drive the car off the lot: the agreed price, minus discounts, plus sales tax, the dealer's documentation fee, title and registration, and any add-ons. Asking for an itemized OTD quote is the easiest way to compare dealers.

Taxable amount = price − discounts + add-ons − trade-in (in most states) Out-the-door = price − discounts + add-ons + sales tax + doc fee + title & registration

Worked example

A $32,000 car with a $1,000 discount, a $5,000 trade-in and 7% sales tax: the tax is charged on $26,000, so it is $1,820. Add a $499 doc fee and $450 for title and registration and the out-the-door price is $33,769. After the trade-in, $28,769 is due; with $3,000 down you would finance $25,769.

Car sales tax and trade-ins

Most states tax only the difference between the price and your trade-in, which can save hundreds of dollars. A few states tax the full price — choose "No" in the trade-in tax credit field. Some states also tax manufacturer rebates. Check your state's rules or ask the dealer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the out-the-door price of a car?

Start with the agreed price, subtract discounts, add sales tax, the doc fee, title and registration and any add-ons.

Is sales tax charged before or after the trade-in?

In most states, after: you pay tax only on the price minus the trade-in value. A few states do not give this credit.

What is a doc fee?

A dealer fee for paperwork. Some states cap it, others do not, so it varies a lot between dealers.

Can I negotiate the out-the-door price?

Yes. Negotiating the total OTD price prevents fees being added back after you agree on the car price.

Are add-ons taxable?

Usually yes, if they are sold with the car. Leave them out if you do not want them.
