How to calculate the fuel cost of a trip

Fuel cost depends on three things: how far you drive, how efficient the car is and what fuel costs. This gas cost calculator works in US units (miles, mpg, dollars per gallon) or metric units (km, L/100 km, price per liter) — switch with the Units menu.

US: gallons = miles ÷ mpg cost = gallons × price per gallon Metric: liters = km × L/100 km ÷ 100 cost = liters × price per liter

Worked example

A 300-mile trip in a car that gets 28 mpg uses about 10.7 gallons. At $3.40 a gallon the trip costs about $36.43. Make it a round trip (2 trips) and split it between 3 people, and each pays about $24.29.

Tips to spend less on fuel

  • Use your real-world mpg from the trip computer or by tracking a full tank — use the gas mileage calculator.
  • Highway speed matters: driving 75 mph instead of 65 can raise fuel use noticeably.
  • Check tire pressure and remove roof boxes when you don't need them.
  • Thinking about going electric? Compare running costs with the EV charging cost calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate gas cost for a trip?

Divide the distance by your car's mpg to get gallons, then multiply by the price per gallon. For a round trip, double the distance.

How do I split gas money with friends?

Calculate the total fuel cost and divide it by the number of people. Enter the number of people in the calculator to see each share.

What mpg should I use?

Use your car's real-world figure. Official ratings are often a little optimistic, especially at highway speeds or in cold weather.

Does the calculator work with liters and kilometers?

Yes. Choose Metric in the Units menu to enter km, L/100 km and price per liter.

Does it include tolls or parking?

No, it only covers fuel. Add tolls, parking and wear separately if you want the full cost of the trip.
